Onyx
Onyx
is
a variety of Chalcedony.
Onyx is similar to Agate except that Onyx usually
has straight, even banding. It has the same variety of colors as Chalcedony, but commonly has
black and white or shades of brown and white banding.
Onyx is an
excellent inlay material. It has been stained to improve or even change
its color since Egyptian times. It is found worldwide. The Romans
carved seal patterns in negative relief to give a raised print and used them as
we use inked stamps today.
